The phrase is intentionally emotional,
but it points to a genuine professional complexity. In one group, a teacher must see the individual child and the
whole community at the same time: who needs support, who is withdrawing, who is dominating, who is ready for a new
challenge, and when the whole group needs a change of pace.

The European quality framework for early childhood education and care identifies staff as one of the most important
factors in children’s well-being, learning and development. It links quality with strong initial preparation,
continuing professional development and working conditions that allow educators to do their job well. OECD work on
the early childhood workforce likewise focuses on staff practices, professional learning, well-being and working conditions.

A strong kindergarten teacher is therefore not simply a “natural talent” who happens to love children. The profession
requires knowledge, methodology, observation, self-regulation, teamwork and the ability to make many small but
      consequential decisions throughout the day.

Children need more than knowledge

One of the most valuable ideas in the original article is that quality in kindergarten cannot be reduced to the amount
of information a child can reproduce. Young children learn through play, communication, repetition, movement,
curiosity and participation. The relevant questions are therefore not only “What does the child know?” but also
“How does the child feel?”, “How does the child participate?”, “Can the child ask for help?” and “Will the child try again after a mistake?”.

Contemporary international frameworks for early childhood development emphasise the relationship between good health,
adequate nutrition, safety and security, responsive caregiving and opportunities for early learning. These conditions
do not operate independently. A child who feels frightened, overloaded or excluded will find it harder to engage in
exploration and learning. Psychological climate is therefore not an optional extra; it is part of the pedagogical environment.

    Key insight:
in early childhood, relationships and environment are not merely the background to learning. They are part of the
mechanism through which children begin to explore, communicate and develop.

What competencies does a modern kindergarten teacher need?

A Bulgarian study published in 2025 in the journal Pedagogy examined kindergarten-teacher professional
      competence through five areas: pedagogical interaction with children; teamwork and interaction with families;
educational environment; work in multicultural and inclusive settings; and leadership. The study included
618 respondents — kindergarten teachers, principals, students and university lecturers.

This framework shows how far the real profession is from the idea that kindergarten teaching is simply “keeping
      children occupied”. Collaboration

Families, the educational team and relevant specialists work in the same direction when a child needs support.

Offer an alternative, not only a prohibition

The original article correctly emphasised a simple pedagogical principle: “Don’t do that” is rarely enough.
A young child needs not only a boundary but also an understandable alternative. If pulling, shouting or running is
inappropriate in a particular situation, the adult’s task is to show what the child can do instead.

This does not mean the absence of discipline. Children need clear rules, repetition and consistency. The difference
is that discipline in kindergarten has an educational purpose: gradually developing self-regulation, the ability
to wait, finish a task, consider others and take age-appropriate responsibility.

Individual pace matters more than competition

Two children of the same chronological age can differ substantially in language development, motor confidence,
social experience, interests and pace of adaptation. A good teacher therefore does not use one child as the permanent
benchmark for another. The focus is on development over time: what the child can already do, what the child is beginning
to attempt, and what support is needed for the next step.

An individual approach does not mean a completely separate programme for every child at every moment. It means
flexibility within a shared pedagogical environment: different forms of support, different levels of challenge,
time for repetition, meaningful choice and attention to individual strengths.

Parents are partners, not an audience

Working with families is one of the most demanding parts of the profession because the teacher must respond both
to the child’s needs and to the expectations, concerns and values of the adults around the child. Good communication
does not mean that parents and teachers will always agree. It means that information is specific, respectful and
focused on behaviour, development and support rather than labels.

When a difficulty appears, a productive conversation begins with observation: what is happening, in which situations,
how often, and what has already been tried. This creates a basis for collaboration and, when necessary, for involving
additional specialists. Teachers should not make medical or psychological diagnoses. Their strength lies in systematic
pedagogical observation and responsible referral for appropriate support.

Health is part of the environment, not a medical role

Children spend a substantial part of the day in kindergarten, so movement, rest, food, hygiene, safety and outdoor
time are integral to everyday organisation. The World Health Organization’s nurturing-care framework brings together
health, nutrition, safety and security, responsive caregiving and opportunities for early learning as interconnected
      conditions for child development.

The teacher’s role here is pedagogical and organisational: to maintain healthy routines, observe relevant changes,
follow established procedures and guidance, and communicate with families and appropriate professionals.
This is a more precise contemporary understanding than expecting the teacher to function as both educator and
      quasi-medical expert.

Teachers also need an environment in which they can be good

Dedication matters, but professionalism should not depend on the belief that an individual teacher must endlessly
compensate for every weakness in the system through personal effort. OECD work on the early childhood workforce
includes staff well-being, job satisfaction, professional development and working conditions among its central concerns.

This changes the perspective: quality is not only a personal characteristic of one “heroic” teacher. It also depends
on the team, leadership, preparation time, professional exchange, access to learning and organisational culture.
Strong teachers need a strong professional environment.

Continuous professional development is not an optional extra

Pedagogy changes. New research appears, new generations of children enter early childhood settings, family contexts
evolve, inclusive education becomes more complex and digital tools continue to change professional practice.
Bulgaria maintains an official information register of approved professional-development programmes for educational
specialists, reflecting the institutional role of continuing teacher qualification.

The value of professional development, however, does not lie in a certificate alone. Good training should return
to the kindergarten group as a better professional decision: clearer communication, stronger visual resources,
more meaningful play, more precise observation, better teamwork or a more responsible way to use a new tool.

    A practical professional test:
if, after a training session, a teacher cannot identify at least one real situation in which they will work more
effectively, calmly or precisely, the training may have remained too far from practice.

When does a kindergarten team need external training?

Usually not simply because “a qualification activity has to be completed”, but because the team sees a recurring
problem or a new opportunity: difficult communication with families, a need for stronger visual resources,
teamwork challenges, inclusive education, responsible use of digital tools, resource creation or adaptation to new expectations.

The useful question is therefore not “Which training title should we choose?” but “What should our team be able
to do better after the training?”.
