Six years later, the question is no longer simply \u201cHow do we connect online?\u201d\n    The more important question is how to create a digital environment in which people actually learn, practise,\n    receive feedback and apply what they have learned.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The European Commission frames digital education as the use of digital tools, technologies and content to support\n    teaching, learning and assessment. Its Digital Education Action Plan 2021\u20132027 emphasises a high-performing digital\n    education ecosystem, while current European guidance on digital education content focuses on quality, reliability,\n    safety, accessibility and inclusion.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    This shifts the focus from \u201cdistance-learning software\u201d to the broader task of digital learning design.\n    The platform is infrastructure. The methodology determines what happens inside it.\n  <\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n<section>\n  <h2>The Platform Is Not the Strategy<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, Moodle and other systems can support different technical functions: communication,\n    live meetings, file sharing, assignments, assessment, course management and activity tracking. None of these\n    functions automatically produces effective learning. A sophisticated platform can host a weak programme, while a\n    relatively simple digital environment may be sufficient for a well-designed one.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Platform selection should therefore begin with needs. A school building a persistent virtual learning environment\n    has different requirements from a company running a six-hour practical workshop. A university course that includes\n    resources, assignments and extended assessment also has a different architecture from a short professional\n    development session for teachers.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <aside class=\"key-insight\">\n    <strong>Key principle:<\/strong>\n    do not choose the learning model around the platform. This creates opportunities, but it also increases the need for clear rules concerning\n    pedagogical use, content quality and human verification.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    In distance learning, AI can support the creation of exercises, alternative versions of materials, questions,\n    examples, summaries, analysis and preliminary feedback. In organisational training it can also support work with\n    realistic processes, documents and scenarios.
