School Bullying and Violence

A UNICEF report examines cases of verbal and physical assault in schools worldwide.
150 million teenagers aged 13 to 15 report having been bullied in the past month or having been in a physical fight in the past year. Additionally, half of all children live in countries that allow some forms of corporal punishment in school, exposing 720 million children to the risk of violence from their teachers.

For too many children, according to the report, schools are danger zones where they can be hit, slapped, bullied, sexually assaulted, physically punished, humiliated, or mocked by peers and teachers.

The tendency to bully is not naturally inherent in a child. Numerous factors influence both a person’s emotional development and their social behavior. Bullying is a way to react to a situation and express one’s inner self.

Specific possible reasons for bullying in school may include:

• demonstration of power;
• standing out, building a reputation;
• envy;
• escaping personal problems;
• experiencing bullying.
